Bored?
In 2001 Milton Glaser did a talk titled Ten Things I Have Learned, below is an extract from number 6 - Style is not to be Trusted, which I've cleaved out because I'm wondering when the next shift is going to be.
"...fatigue occurs when people see too much of the same thing too often. So every ten years or so there is a stylistic shift and things are made to look different."

Designer of the Week
Abram Games
In a time where the commercial artist produced hand crafted concepts Abram Games was a hugely influential in creating graphic imagery for a massive array of clients including Shell, Guinness and London Transport amongst others. Influenced by surrealist art, he recognised the power of the subconscious and used this in his work to weave layers of ideas together in an effectively simple style of bold and colorful images. It was this innovative style that got him appointed as an official war poster artist for the British through the Second World War.
Like most propaganda posters, those designed by Games constitute as poignant documents of social history, and have become an icon of design.

New site on the block
In the seemingly bottomless soup that is the internet, there are the websites that float into view demanding to be seen, talked about and clicked through. We believe the new Buckley Gray Yeoman site is one of these. Easily navigated the flash based site creates a BGY world a-buzz with activity; pencils roll, badges bounce and Polaroid’s float across the pages in a fluid orderly disorder (if you can have such a thing). It’s striking, entertaining and 'real'.
www.buckleygrayyeoman.com These other, highly intelligent people with a keen eye for style seem to think the same... “More fun than the average....so no change there!”
“Just had a look at this - really excellent, guys, really excellent! Well done.”
“Very impressive!”
“I must say the new website is fantastic - really clever and unique.”

Designer of the Week
|
David Carson Famous for abandoning any sense of conventional graphic organisation, his style of merging layouts, colliding text and experimental photography broke the traditional rules of publishing right left and centre. His widely imitated style was fresh, confusing, often unreadable but incredibly exciting - he shook things up and for his efforts he was crowned as one of the leaders of "grunge" - revered as one of the most, if not the most, influential designers of the 1990’s. Take your hats off ladies & gentlemen.

DANIEL T. AMES
A master typographer at the turn of the last century - his beautiful penmanship sums up the flamboyant fantasy of the Victorian era, when people liked to believe in fairies and death was an obsessive preoccupation.

Naked man sunbathing!

You've got to love the crazies in London.

Whilst walking home...
|
...young Jeavon happened across a most peculiar car with a most unusually passenger. Severely battered and sporting a tax disc for 1971 you have to wonder where it came from and who she is waiting for. I’m personally going with the past and Andrew McCarthy, but I could be wrong...

Guy Bourdin
|
On Friday evening. In London. It rained.
It was that hideous fine rain that gets you really wet really quickly. But despite this, I and a friend made our way through the rapidly growing puddles in what was part of the East London docks to the Wapping Project, to revive our souls through the work of Guy Bourdin. Pre digital & retouching the 32 unseen photographs (exhibited brilliantly) made us forget that we were sopping wet and dripping onto the AstroTurf floor. It was, to put it simply, marvellous.
The exhibition is FREE and on till 4th June 09

Round the corner and along abit
|

Evolving before our very eyes is a rather marvellous splurge of graffiti wrapped around a hideous bulk of a building, and I'll advise in my best Yorkshire "Gerr yursen daahn ta Curtain rd ta av eur skeg"*.
*get yourself down to Curtain road to have a look
NB: Please forgive the blueness of the photographs, they were taken with a camera phone that really doesn't like sunlight!

Street Art
|
On a sunny Sunday afternoon I was partaking in the very British past time of having a drink in a pub with friends and discussing the state of things - the conversation ambled to chatting about street art in Shoreditch, its rise and one day decline. I could drone on, but whilst flicking through Flicker I found this person who has already written about the subject and quite frankly knows more and says it better. An interesting read.
