Question.

Forgive the generalisation, but are designers guilty of subconsciously following graphic design trends, using common elements of design - such as swirls/ornaments and sixties circular colour combinations - in their work?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid it's inevitable. We are all significantly but subliminally influenced by what we see, and anyone who is interested in design and visual things will find themselves repeating shapes, colours etc. That way trends are born. There is also something innate within us - the collective unconsciousness of archetypes, or archetypal subconscious I think Jung called it - which ensures the repetition of certain types of design devices as a form of communication. Plus the predictable cycle of fashion which always appears to draw its *new* ideas from a period about 20 years earlier... There was an amazing TV programme with Derren Brown which showed the power of subliminal images on some advertising creatives - I'll see if I can find it to you and send a copy! Love to all at Crumpled Dog. xxx
